Proverbs 16:1 (NLT)
“We can make our own plans, but the Lord gives the right answer.”
It’s natural to make plans—5-year plans, 10-year plans, and beyond. We map out education, careers, family goals, and other desires, believing they align with what’s right. But as Christians, we are reminded that the Lord orders the steps of a good man. This is based on Psalm 37:23, KJV. No matter how well-crafted our plans may seem, they are incomplete without God’s guidance.
The Bible calls us to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17, KJV). We should approach all things “by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving” (Philippians 4:6, KJV). This isn’t just a suggestion; it’s a necessity for staying aligned with God’s will.
We see the consequences of neglecting this truth in the story of Israel. They went to battle against Ai without inquiring of the Lord. They suffered defeat and lost many lives (Joshua 7:3-5). Their failure reminds us that relying on our understanding is dangerous. This contradicts Proverbs 3:5-6. It says:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths” (NKJV).
Let this Proverb challenge us to invite God into every area of our lives. These areas include our families, our work, our goals, and our dreams. True success does not come from our own plans. It comes from surrendering them to the Lord. We must seek His wisdom at every turn.
Reflection Question: Have you paused today to inquire of the Lord and align your plans with His will?
