Proverbs Daily: Proverbs 23:23
“Buy the truth, and do not sell it; also wisdom and instruction and understanding.”
Reflection and Teaching
Proverbs 23:23 urges us to actively seek and prioritize truth, wisdom, and understanding, treating them as treasures of immeasurable value. Let’s break it down:
- Buying the Truth:
- This doesn’t mean a literal purchase but a metaphorical one. It calls us to invest effort, time, and even sacrifice to obtain truth. This truth often comes from God’s Word, prayer, and wise counsel.
- Do Not Sell It:
- Once we have gained truth and wisdom, we should hold tightly to them. We should never compromise or trade them for worldly gain. The value of truth is eternal and should not be sacrificed for temporary rewards or approval.
- Wisdom, Instruction, and Understanding:
- These are the companions of truth. Seeking them strengthens our ability to live righteously, make sound decisions, and reflect God’s character in our lives.
Alternative Perspective: Giving the Truth Freely
The scripture says not to sell the truth. There’s another layer to consider: What if it means we should give it away freely? As recipients of God’s truth, we are called to be stewards, not owners. We’ve invested in learning and understanding His Word. We should share it generously. Jesus instructed us: “Freely you have received; freely give” (Matthew 10:8).
This perspective reminds us that the truth is not just for our benefit—it’s a gift meant to bless others. By giving it away without expectation of return, we reflect the generosity and love of God.

Prayer
“Lord, thank You for the gift of Your truth, wisdom, and understanding. Teach us to value these treasures and invest in them daily. Help us to hold tightly to Your Word and stand firm in our convictions. May we also share what we have received, reflecting Your grace and love to the world. Let our lives glorify You and bring light to others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
