Proverbs 7:3 Reflection
“Bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart.”
This verse reminds us to keep the Word of God as the most important foundation in our lives. Just as Jesus instructed the rich young ruler, “If you want to enter life, keep the commandments” (Matthew 19:17), we are called to actively integrate God’s Word into our thoughts, actions, and daily routines. Moses echoed this sentiment when he instructed the people of Israel:
“These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.” (Deuteronomy 6:6–9)
To “write the Word of God upon our hearts” is to allow it to shape and define us. But how do we accomplish this? The answer lies in what we allow to make impressions on us. An impression is a lasting effect or influence that shapes our thoughts, emotions, and character. Spiritually, it is the mark that forms within us based on our interactions, observations, and experiences.
What we listen to, read, watch, and participate in make impressions on us. These activities either draw us closer to or further from God. As Proverbs 4:23 reminds us, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
Steps to Write God’s Word on Our Hearts
- Meditate on Scripture Daily
- “Blessed is the one… whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.” (Psalm 1:2)
- Choose Media That Honors God
- “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” (Philippians 4:8)
- Surround Yourself with Godly Influences
- “Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.” (Proverbs 13:20)
- Live Out God’s Word
- “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” (James 1:22)
We consistently apply these principles. We not only bind God’s Word on our fingers and hearts, but we also guard our lives against sin. We walk in His light. As Psalm 119:11 declares, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us Your Word as a guide and anchor in our lives. Help us to write it upon our hearts through what we see, hear, and do. May our daily choices reflect our desire to grow closer to You and be transformed by Your wisdom. Guard our hearts, and let Your Word be the light that leads us in all we do. Amen.
