Proverbs 13:3 warns us:

“Those who guard their lips preserve their lives, but those who speak rashly will come to ruin.”

This verse reminds us to guard not only what we say but how we say it. Words are powerful—they can build up or tear down, bring life or destruction. As followers of Christ, we must think before we speak. We need to ensure that our words align with God’s will.

Paul reinforces this in:

  • Ephesians 4:29: “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths. Speak only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs. This will benefit those who listen.”

Let every word we speak carry the breath of God—words of life, encouragement, and goodness. Our speech should reflect God’s heart and be a source of edification and blessing to those around us.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the gift of speech and the ability to communicate Your love. Help us to guard our words. Let us use them to build others up, just as You have instructed in Your Word. Let every word that proceeds from our mouths reflect Your goodness and breathe life into those who hear us. Guide us to speak with wisdom, kindness, and love, so that we may glorify You in all we say. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Call to Action:

  1. Pause Before Speaking: Before saying anything, ask yourself, “Will this bring life, encouragement, or goodness to the listener?”
  2. Practice Edification: Make it a daily habit to speak a word of encouragement to at least one person.
  3. Memorize and Meditate: Commit Proverbs 13:3 and Ephesians 4:29 to memory this week. Reflect on how these scriptures can guide your speech.
  4. Accountability: Share this message with someone close to you. Encourage each other to guard your words in line with God’s will.

Let’s take this to heart and become vessels of life-giving words, reflecting God’s Spirit in all that we say.
