Guard Your Ears and Heart: A Reflection on Proverbs 17:4
A wicked person listens to deceitful lips; a liar pays attention to a destructive tongue. – Proverbs 17:4 (NIV)
This Proverb reveals the character of people and how it’s reflected in what they choose to listen to. It might seem harmless—or even entertaining—to sit and listen to someone’s words, especially if their stories are amusing. We need to step back. When we do, we examine the company we keep. A sobering truth comes to light: what we listen to shapes us.
Scripture asks, “What fellowship has light with darkness?” (2 Corinthians 6:14). The company we choose speaks volumes about who we are. If someone thrives on listening to corruption, lies, or destructive talk, it’s because they are drawn to it. Over time, what they feed on becomes who they are. The same warning applies to us: if we indulge in gossip, deceit, or harmful speech, we put ourselves at risk. Even passive participation means we may become what we consume.
As the Bible reminds us, “Bad company corrupts good character” (1 Corinthians 15:33). This Proverb is a wake-up call to guard our hearts and ears. Surround yourself with those who speak truth, life, and encouragement. Choose words and conversations that reflect righteousness and build others up. By doing so, we protect our character, align ourselves with God’s will, and radiate His light to others.
🌟 Take Action Today:
- Reflect on the conversations and relationships in your life. Are they building you up or tearing you down?
- Choose to spend time with people who encourage, inspire, and speak truth.
- Speak life into someone else’s day—share words of hope, love, or encouragement in your circle today.
- Let’s guard our hearts together! Share this reflection and inspire someone to evaluate the power of their words and associations.
Prayer:
Lord, help me discern the company I keep and the words I entertain. Let my heart be drawn to Your truth and my ears inclined to wisdom. Strengthen me to resist the pull of corruption and instead seek relationships and conversations that glorify You. Keep me grounded in Your word, that I may reflect Your light in all I do. Amen.
