Proverbs 23:7 – As a Man Thinks in His Heart, So Is He

Opening Scripture

“For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.” – Proverbs 23:7 (KJV)

Reflection

Our thoughts are the foundation of who we truly are. What we meditate on daily, whether consciously or unconsciously, shapes our character, actions, and relationships. Proverbs 23:7 reveals a dual truth. The reality of our hearts determines our spiritual health. It also reflects outwardly in how we treat others.

Sometimes, people may appear to do good outwardly. They say “eat and drink.” However, their hearts are not aligned with their words or actions. Such insincerity reveals a selfish intent, one that is displeasing to God. Relationships built on such intentions wound others. They also hinder the person’s ability to live in alignment with God’s purpose.

But this is not the end of the story. God calls us to grow beyond these false ways and into a heart that mirrors His love and desires. As Christians, our goal is to align our hearts, words, and actions with the will of God. This begins with what we feed our hearts and minds.

The Battle for the Heart

The condition of your heart is influenced by what you feed it. Consider these questions:

  • Are you feeding your heart with selfish desires, anger, or hatred?
  • Are you allowing the world’s influences—music, media, or toxic relationships—to shape your identity?

Do you choose to fill your heart with God’s truth? Are you meditating on His Word? Are you surrounding yourself with people who inspire righteousness?

“Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33). When our hearts are filled with His Spirit, our intentions, words, and actions naturally flow in alignment with His desires.

A Personal Testimony

I reflect on this verse through the lens of my own story. My stepfather was a man who provided for us, but his heart was not truly with us as children. His intentions, though outwardly good, were rooted in selfishness—a desire to secure a relationship with my mother. As I grew older and gained wisdom, I saw how his insincerity cost him dearly, even in his ministry.

This experience could have hardened my heart, but instead, I allowed God to transform me. Now, at 45 years old, I strive to serve others with sincerity. My motivation is not personal gain, but because the Lord has called me. He has called me to love and serve with a pure heart. That transformation reflects the truth of Proverbs 23:7 in action.

A Challenge to All of Us

So, the question is: What are you feeding your heart today?

  • Are you feeding it jealousy, negativity, and pride, or are you nourishing it with faith, hope, and love?
  • Are your actions motivated by a sincere desire to serve God, or are you seeking to fulfill your own desires?

As believers, we are called to seek purity in our hearts. We should allow God to renew our minds daily (Romans 12:2). Our faithfulness in this will shape not only who we are but how we impact the lives of others.

Father God, we thank You for the wisdom of Your Word. Help us to guard our hearts and minds and align our thoughts with Your will. Search our hearts, O Lord, and remove anything that is selfish, impure, or insincere. May our words, actions, and intentions reflect the love and truth of Christ. Help us to nourish our hearts with Your Word each day. By doing this, we may become the men and women You’ve called us to be. Open doors and opportunities for us to serve You with diligent hands and sincere hearts. In Jesus’ name, amen.
