Proverbs 10:30 – The Righteous Shall Never Be Removed
“The righteous shall never be removed: but the wicked shall not inhabit the earth.” – Proverbs 10:30 (KJV)
Throughout history, those who walk in righteousness may face trials. They might suffer oppression and even exile. However, they can never truly be erased. Their legacy, faith, and impact live on—because truth stands the test of time.
The Igbo People & the Journey Through Slavery:
Long before the transatlantic slave trade, the Igbo people of West Africa believed in Chukwu. He was considered the supreme God and the source of all life. Their traditional faith held strong beliefs in justice, morality, and spiritual balance.
European traders and enslavers arrived. They captured thousands of Igbo men, women, and children. The captives were brought to the Americas in chains. Yet, even in suffering, their faith endured. Many clung to the belief that their Creator had not abandoned them. When Christianity reached their descendants, many saw Jesus Christ as the fulfillment of their search for truth. Consequently, the Igbo became one of the most Christianized peoples in Africa.
One such man was Olaudah Equiano (Gustavus Vassa). He was a young Igbo boy sold into slavery. Later, he purchased his freedom. He became one of the most powerful voices in the abolitionist movement.
Olaudah Equiano – A Voice of Righteousness:
Equiano’s journey was painful. He was kidnapped from his village. He was shipped across the ocean in horrific conditions. Forced into a world that denied his humanity, he could have been lost to history. But God had a different plan.
Through divine providence, Equiano gained his freedom, educated himself, and became a Christian abolitionist. He wrote his life story, revealing the evils of slavery to the world. His book, The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, was influential. It played a key role in ending the British slave trade.
Despite being removed from his homeland, Equiano’s righteousness endured, while the wicked system that enslaved him eventually fell apart. Just as Proverbs 10:30 says, the righteous shall never be removed, but the wicked shall not last.
The Igbo Landing – A Stand for Freedom:
Not all Igbo captives were willing to accept enslavement. One of the most powerful, yet lesser-known, acts of resistance was the Igbo Landing of 1803.
A group of Igbo captives were bound for slavery in Georgia. They chose to walk into the sea rather than submit to oppression. They chose to walk into the sea rather than submit to oppression. Some say they sang as they waded into the water, declaring in their native tongue:
“The water brought us here, and the water will take us home.”
They refused to let wickedness claim their souls. Their story remains a powerful testament to faith, dignity, and resistance—one that echoes the truth of Proverbs 10:30.
The Righteous Shall Never Be Removed:
Equiano’s writings to the faith of the Igbo people illustrate their enduring legacy. The survival of their descendants proves that the righteous have never been removed. Their memory, courage, and faith remain alive today.
As we honor Black History Month, let us remember:
- The faith and resilience of those who suffered injustice but never lost hope.
- The power of righteousness to outlast oppression.
- The truth that God sees, God delivers, and God preserves His people.
Evil may rise, but it will not last. The legacy of the righteous endures forever.
