Sojourner Truth: A Legacy of Righteous Prayer and Justice

Introduction: A Woman Called by God

In a time of deep oppression and injustice, a woman named Isabella Bomfree was born into slavery. She endured great suffering. Yet, she found her strength in the Lord. She later became known as Sojourner Truth, believing God had called her to “travel and declare the truth.” She lived out Proverbs 15:29, trusting that God hears the prayers of the righteous and stands against the wicked.

1. God Hears the Cry of the Oppressed

🔥 Call to Action: Let’s pray and stand for truth, justice, and righteousness in our own communities. God still hears the prayers of the righteous!.

Sojourner Truth’s Faith in Action:

  • She prayed for justice when her son, Peter, was illegally sold into slavery in Alabama. Through God’s grace, she won a court case to bring him back!
  • She trusted God’s voice when she changed her name. She became a traveling preacher. She declared that the Spirit led her to “go and tell the people the truth.”
  • She believed in the power of righteous prayer, knowing that true justice comes from God.

🔥 Lesson: If we are walking in righteousness, our prayers do not fall on deaf ears. God hears and moves on behalf of the faithful!

2. The Wicked Will Not Prevail Forever

“The Lord is far from the wicked…” (Proverbs 15:29)
The wickedness of slavery, segregation, and injustice seemed powerful, but God was far from it. Sojourner Truth knew this, which is why she never stopped speaking the truth.

Examples of Her Bold Stand Against Evil:

  • She spoke against slavery, confronting leaders and exposing the evils of oppression.
  • She fought against segregation, taking legal action against a streetcar conductor who tried to throw her off a train in Washington, DC. She won that case, proving that God fights for righteousness.
  • She challenged injustice within the Church, reminding believers that Christ came to set ALL people free.

🔥 Lesson: The world may seem filled with wickedness, but God will not remain silent. He moves through His people to bring justice and righteousness.

3. Righteousness is More Than Words—It’s Action!

“The prayer of the righteous availeth much.” (James 5:16)
Sojourner Truth did more than just pray—she acted in faith! Her work in the abolitionist movement, women’s rights, and the Civil War were all evidence that her faith was alive and working.

Faith Without Works is Dead (James 2:26)

  • She helped free slaves through the Underground Railroad, acting as the hands and feet of Christ.
  • She ministered to Union soldiers, encouraging them in battle.
  • She petitioned Congress to grant land to freed slaves, fighting for their future.

🔥 Lesson: If we are truly righteous, our faith should move us to action! God calls us to pray AND to stand for truth.
