The Strong Tower: James Lawson and the Power of Divine Refuge

Foundational Scripture: Proverbs 18:10 (KJV)
“The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.”

The Civil Rights Movement was more than a fight for justice. It was a spiritual battlefield. Men and women of God took refuge in the Lord to withstand unspeakable violence. James Lawson was one of those warriors. He carried wisdom, strategy, and unshakable faith instead of weapons. Armed with these tools, he became a pillar in the movement. He trained future leaders in nonviolent resistance that shook the foundations of segregation and oppression.

The Call to Wisdom: A Different Kind of Warfare

James Lawson was not drawn to reactionary violence—he understood that true power is found in wisdom and discipline. Solomon sought knowledge above all else (Proverbs 4:7). Similarly, Lawson studied the principles of nonviolent resistance in India. In India, Gandhi’s teachings mirrored Christ’s command to turn the other cheek (Matthew 5:39).

When he returned to the U.S., he didn’t just protest—he trained a generation. In a basement in Nashville, he taught young students how to face brutality without fear, without hate, and without retaliation. He equipped them with the armor of faith (Ephesians 6:11). This armor enabled them to stand in the face of fire without being consumed.

Running Into the Strong Tower

The righteous don’t run into battle alone—they run into the Lord. During the Freedom Rides, sit-ins, and marches, many were beaten, arrested, and even killed, but they found refuge in God. When Lawson and his students were dragged from lunch counters, they were thrown into jail. Their safety wasn’t in their surroundings. It was in the presence of the Almighty.

  • Psalm 46:1 reminds us: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
  • Isaiah 41:10 declares: “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”

Even when expelled from Vanderbilt for his activism, Lawson did not waver. He stood firm. He knew that God would make room for him. Years later, Vanderbilt apologized and honored him as a professor. His gift truly made room for him (Proverbs 18:16).

Faith That Moves History

Lawson’s legacy is a testament to faith in action. He didn’t just pray—he strategized. He didn’t just hope—he equipped others with knowledge. And because he built his foundation on God, his impact lives on.

His students went on to desegregate cities, lead Freedom Rides, march for voting rights, and shape America’s fight for justice. Yet through it all, they knew that their ultimate protection was not in laws or leaders, but in the Lord Himself.

The Lesson for Us Today

The battle isn’t over. Today, injustice still exists, but the strategy remains the same:

  • Run into the Lord. He is our strong tower.
  • Seek wisdom, because wisdom is power.
  • Train and equip the next generation, because legacy matters.
  • Stand firm, knowing that God will fight for us.

James Lawson’s story is not just history—it’s a blueprint. May we all have the faith, wisdom, and courage to take refuge in the Lord and walk boldly in righteousness.

A Prayer for Strength and Refuge

“Lord, You were the refuge of our fathers and mothers during their trials. Just as You shielded James Lawson and his fellow warriors, be our strong tower today. Teach us to seek wisdom, to stand in righteousness, and to trust in Your protection. Let our lives be testimonies of faith in action. May we continue the fight for justice in Your name. Amen.”

A Modern Call to Action: Walking in Wisdom & Faith Today

The lessons of James Lawson are not just history—they are a blueprint for the present and future. The same faith that sustained the Civil Rights leaders is available to us today. Their struggles may have been against segregation and blatant oppression. However, we still face injustice, inequality, and spiritual battles. These challenges require the same wisdom, strategy, and divine strength.

How We Apply These Principles Today:

  1. Run Into the Strong Tower – The world is filled with chaos, but God is still our refuge. In every battle—personal or societal—seek the Lord first (Proverbs 18:10).
  2. Seek Wisdom & Strategy – Change is not just about action; it is about knowledge, preparation, and spiritual discipline. Educate yourself, train others, and be rooted in truth (Proverbs 4:7).
  3. Stand Firm in Righteousness – Whether in social justice, community work, or personal struggles, stand boldly in faith. Do not be swayed by fear or hate, but move forward with love and divine strength (Ephesians 6:13).
  4. Equip & Mentor the Next Generation – Just as James Lawson trained leaders who changed history, we should follow his example. We must invest in the next generation. Share wisdom, encourage faith, and lead by example (2 Timothy 2:2).
  5. Use Your Voice & Influence – Speak truth, advocate for justice, and be the light in dark places (Matthew 5:14-16). Whether through activism, ministry, education, or everyday life—be a vessel of God’s power and wisdom.

We are called to be modern-day torchbearers of truth, justice, and divine wisdom. The same God who carried Lawson and the Civil Rights warriors is with us today.

Will we rise up, seek wisdom, and stand firm in faith?
