What Makes a Good Neighbor?

A good neighbor goes beyond pleasantries—they embody kindness, compassion, and genuine care. They make an effort to connect, not just in moments of need. In everyday encounters, they offer a smile, a helping hand, or a listening ear. It’s not about grand gestures. It’s about small, consistent acts of thoughtfulness. These acts show that they’re invested in the well-being of those around them. In a world that often feels disconnected, a good neighbor shows us that community is important. They assure us that we’re never truly alone.

Parable of the Good Samaritan! This parable is one of Jesus’ most powerful teachings about what it means to be a good neighbor. It’s found in Luke 10:25-37. Here's a brief summary:

In response to a question about who qualifies as a "neighbor," Jesus tells the story of a man who was robbed, beaten, and left for dead. Several people passed by, including a priest and a Levite, but they didn’t stop to help. Finally, a Samaritan—a person from a group traditionally despised by the Jews—came along. He not only stopped to care for the injured man but went above and beyond by ensuring his ongoing care, even covering the cost of his recovery.

Jesus ends the parable by asking, “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” The answer, of course, was the one who showed mercy. Jesus then instructs, “Go and do likewise.”

This parable teaches that being a neighbor is about showing compassion and mercy to others, regardless of social or cultural boundaries.
