Proverbs 12:25 (NLT):
“Worry weighs a person down; an encouraging word cheers a person up.”
The Power of Words: A Personal Reflection
Words are one of the most powerful forces we have. The Bible tells us, “By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth” (Psalm 33:6). Another verse reminds us, “The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word” (Hebrews 1:3).
Words hold the power to create and sustain the universe. Imagine their impact on our lives and those around us. Words have the power to uplift or tear down, to bring hope or despair.
Proverbs 12:25 reminds us of this truth: “Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, but a good word makes it glad.” When we offer a kind or encouraging word, we become vessels of healing, helping others overcome the heaviness in their hearts.

Today, I choose to use my words to encourage, to give hope, to express kindness, and to reflect love. Nobody likes being talked down to or being the subject of negative talk. Words affect everyone, but especially children, as they grow. They shape confidence, self-image, and the ability to thrive. Too much praise can make a child conceited, while harsh criticism can crush their spirit.
Words carry weight. Without them, nothing would be accomplished. Words command buildings to be built or torn down. They have the power to shape futures, relationships, and even entire communities.
So, I ask: What do you use your words for? Are you building up, or are you tearing down?
Let’s make this personal. Take a moment today to reflect:
- Who in your life needs encouragement?
- What words can you say that will bring healing, hope, or joy to someone’s heart?
Let us choose to speak words of life, just as Jesus did. Let our words reflect the wisdom and truth found in Scripture. As the Bible says, “The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life” (Proverbs 10:11). Let us be that fountain for others.
Devotional Thought:
Each day, we are presented with opportunities to speak life into someone’s heart. A kind word, even a small one, can be powerful. It might be the difference between someone staying stuck in despair or stepping forward with hope.
Today, I challenge you to find someone who might need a good word. Send a text, make a call, or speak face-to-face. Reflect the light of Christ with the words you choose, and watch how they transform the atmosphere around you.
Amen.
